Two Wrongs ...

... don't make a right.  I know, I know.  But I kind of couldn't help myself.  And it did feel right ... you know good ... at least for a minute or two ... and then I felt a little bad.

While out running errands, I crossed paths with a fellow mom that I know (but don't really know) through a mutual friend.  We exchanged greetings and made comments about how much our two-year-old girls have changed since last time we saw each other.  Blah, blah, blah, ... pleasantries and what-not.

And then she glanced down at my adorable baby bump and  asked, oh-so-sweet-and-innocently with a slightly bemused look on her face, "Are you pregnant (pause) or not?"

Wow! That's tactful, huh?  Because I've been hearing this kind of crap a lot lately, I recovered rather quickly.

My reply ... "Yep, due in December.  And I can't believe so-and-so (our mutual friend) didn't tell me that you're expecting, too!"

She's not ... pregnant ... and I totally knew that ... but I just couldn't resist. As far as I'm concerned, "Thems fightin' words!"

Damn girl! I can't believe you did it!!! The just may be one of the ballsiest things I have ever heard you doing!!! I'm laughing at your courage...and a bit intrigued by what her response was! And the pic - HILARIOUS!!!

Oh my. That just TOTALLY made my morning!!! I seriously don't know if I've ever heard as good a come back as that one, way to think on your feet!

Her response ... first she thought I was kidding - nervous little laugh. Then she looked all flustered for a second and said something like, "I'm not and I guess I'll never wear this jacket again."

Admittedly, I was totally blazing red-faced at this point ... which took a bit of the bite out of my punch ... but it still felt good :) Said a hasty good-bye, grabbed N by the hand, and skedaddled!

Awesome! well...I kind of feel bad for the other lady but then I don't. She has a child she should know, right?

I'm sorry but I don't see what the "friend" did wrong? Maybe I'm missing something but did she know you are pregnant and/or aware of your situation?

MAC - I hear what you're saying ... and my reaction comes after hearing this kind of crap my entire pregnancy. However, I am guessing there's a more tactful way of asking if someone is pregnant or not ... especially someone who is 31 weeks along! If she didn't think I looked pregnant (enough) to her, then she should've asked our mutual friend - she doesn't know me well enough to ask such a loaded, personal question ... especially not in a public place. That's all I am saying.

That is exactly the reason why I purchased a new shirt right after my twins were born. It read," Just had twins," and had two little cute drawings of babies underneath. I was still gi-normous, but I didn't want anyone to come up to me and ask when the baby was due!!!

ouch! i would have wanted to say that but never really would have. good for you!

When I started reading this, I wondering "was this from Thursday", but even I have more tact than that! Then again, I had someone try to insist that I wasn't pregnant when I was about 33 weeks and it was beyond obvious that I was pregnant. Some people are clueless.

supahmommy- somethin's wrong with that girl said...

freaking hilarious

are you pregnant or not?
what??? or not???

GUESS WHAT.. she'll learn from this.. as we all have at one point. WE learn tact from being tactless.

Happy schooling lady!
MAMA SAID KNOCK YOU OUT.
XOXO

and i think you should make your comic strip a carnival when you're up to it someday.. it's so clever and fun. I have to try it one of these days. It would work well for those days when there's not a ton of traffic and.. you didnt' just write your heart out .. for an hour .. only to have 2 people read it. you know? BUt it's sooo cute... and catchy.

I have to figure out how to line up the 3 pics. I'M GETTING BETTER D! I'M GETTING BETTER!!

i laughed out loud at this post

* I marched across a play area at 32 weeks and bitch slapped verbally a woman whose child was accosting all of the other kids.. and then TOUCHED MY Kid.

WORDS JUST FLEW OUT OF MY MOUTH WITHOUT EVEN A THOUGHT. I did it a million times that last trimester.

* it was so freakin fun.

It's true that she was tactless, but I feel really bad for her. I'm also willing to bet that she wouldn't connect what she said with what you did in order to learn some tact. Those of us who have had kids recently and aren't happy with how we look feel extra self-conscious, and she was probably thinking more about how fat she must look than that she shouldn't have asked if you were pregnant. Maybe you can tell the mutual friend what happened (or maybe she's reading this?) so she can pass along the life lesson in case it was missed. :-)

I think you need to get some of those boxin' gloves girl! :-)

Wow! What a come she back. I am sure she will never ask someone again if they are pregnant. But didn't you say you are measuring small? So in all fairness you might not look super pregnant to people who don't know you well enough.

Oh yea ... did I ever tell you about the guy a Freddie's who asked when I was "due" when I had Sahara strapped on me w/ the Ergo????

I spent the first 6 or so months of my pregnancy just outright introducing myself as "Hi, I'm Noelle, and I'm pregnant not fat" just to avoid this kind of crap. You did the right thing. Her question was rude at best and intentional at worst. Even if she didn't know, there was no tact in the question and she didn't even have the decency to look shameful once she said it. Plus, when did it become okay to take note of people's weight gain? I mean, what if you hadn't been pregnant? Then she would have just been calling you fat. Ugh! Aweful! So, side note: About a week after my daughter was born, my neighbor stopped by and I answered the door and he said something like "any day now, right?". Uh oh. Insert foot in mouth. Though I was mortified that he still thought I was pregnant, I smiled and said, "no the baby you hear upstairs is mine". Nice. He did, at least, have the decency to go completely red with embarrassment, apologize and explain that he hadn't even looked at my stomach. I still cried (dumb hormones) though when he left. Some people's filters just need to be replaced, I guess.

This takes me back to the time when Josh asked that girl when she due because she was wearing one of those not so flattering sinched under the boob tent shirts...poor girl cried. But Josh learned his lesson for sure. He will see someone huge as a house pregnant and will still act surprised if they mention being pregnant. So I say kudos to you and your quick witted hormonal third trimester brain! Sometimes you just have to let it fly! And to all the so called "haters" posts...umm like you are perfect and have never said something out of spite and enjoyed every minute of it.
